Mitsubishi PLC: FX5U vs Q Series – A Cost Controller's Comparison

Q series has a mature installed base. Spare CPUs, I/O modules, and power supplies are easy to source from authorized distributors. FX5U is newer, but Mitsubishi Electric has expanded the line aggressively. For a maintenance team, the real issue is lead time. If your plant can't wait three weeks for a CPU, you need a spare on the shelf—regardless of series.

It was a hand held battery charger for a technician's field tools, not a PLC backup battery. It got approved because the vendor had included it in the same quote. Final Comparison: Which Mitsubishi PLC Should You Choose?

There isn't a universal winner in 2025. There's only the best fit for your situation.

  • Choose the FX5U if: you're building a new machine, need 128 I/O or less (or know your expansion path), want integrated Ethernet, and your programmers are comfortable with GX Works3.
  • Choose the Q series if: you're expanding an existing line, need modular flexibility and high I/O counts, have a large installed base of Q series hardware, or rely on legacy Mitsubishi PLC instruction list programs.

It took me about six years and 150 orders to understand that the PLC model matters less than the ecosystem around it. The hardware is usually reliable. The decision that changes your budget is programming, spares, and support.

So before you approve that quote, ask the people who will program and maintain the PLC. Then run the numbers again with their answers. That's how you avoid the hidden costs that aren't on the datasheet.
