I handle purchasing for a 200-person automation company. Roughly $350,000 a year goes through my desk across 11 vendors, and one request keeps coming back no matter how much I streamline the process: "find the best price on Mitsubishi PLC modules."
For the first three years in this role, I thought that's exactly what I was supposed to do. I'd email three or four suppliers, compare quotes side by side, and pick the lowest number. I kept a spreadsheet tracking unit prices by vendor, like it was a scoreboard. When a quote came in 7 percent below our regular distributor, I considered that a personal win.
Then May 2022 happened. The maintenance manager politely suggested I change my approach. "Politely" — actually, he didn't say it politely. He said: "I don't care what you save on quotes. I care that the line keeps running." That one sentence reordered my entire view of procurement.
Let's be honest here: Mitsubishi PLC prices genuinely do vary between suppliers. And any procurement person who says they've never been tempted by a low quote from an unfamiliar vendor is lying. The part numbers look identical. The product photos look identical. The box has the same Mitsubishi logo.
The assumption is that a Mitsubishi PLC is a commodity. One FX5U is the same as any other FX5U, so the cheapest one is the smart one. That reasoning is easy to defend to a finance department. It's also dangerously incomplete.
The real question isn't "how much does this module cost?" It's "how much does this module cost to get installed, configured, and running in my facility?" Those two numbers can be very different.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: the quote is the opening bid in a conversation, not the final bill. The sticker price is maybe 60 percent of what that module will really cost your company.
Mitsubishi Electric manufactures PLCs in multiple facilities around the world. Authorized distributors source through official regional channels, which means the products come with proper documentation, firmware that matches your regional setup, and valid warranties.
What most people don't realize is that non-authorized sellers often source from parallel markets. The module is genuine — that's the trap. It's just built for a different region, routed through a different supply chain, or sitting in liquidation inventory. Same box. Same labels. But the serial number won't register in Mitsubishi's system, the warranty is void from day one, and if a module fails on your line, nobody owns the problem.
I once ordered five FX5U modules from a low-price supplier because the part number matched our engineer's request exactly. The part number was correct. But our engineer's email had included additional specification notes — a real-time clock option, specific to the variant we needed — and the budget supplier hadn't bothered to read past the part number. The modules arrived. They looked great. And they weren't what our line needed.
Our engineer caught it during installation, which saved us from a bigger disaster but still cost us: a restocking fee, a week of waiting for the correct modules, and the overtime spent redoing the setup. The 7 percent "savings" — or rather, the 7 percent on paper — turned into roughly 15 percent extra once we accounted for the delays.
A Mitsubishi PLC is only useful when your engineers can program it. This is where I really messed up.
We bought modules from a bargain vendor and saved around $700 on hardware. What came with them? Exactly nothing. No documentation worth the name, no support line that knew a PLC from a toaster, no guidance on getting GX Works3 — Mitsubishi's engineering software for MELSEC iQ-R, iQ-F, and Q series — configured with the modules. My engineers spent days digging through forum posts, piecing together compatibility answers that a decent distributor's support engineer would have resolved in a fifteen-minute phone call.
Eventually I had to enroll two engineers in a Mitsubishi PLC programming training course through our authorized distributor. That single investment — two seats in a structured training program — cost more than the hardware savings we'd chased. Put another way: we spent real money on training that we would have gotten guidance on for free, had we bought the modules from a distributor that actually knew the product line.
May 2022 was the moment everything crystallized. Our main facility runs a Mitsubishi Q series architecture — multiple racks, remote I/O, the full setup. It started with a Q CPU throwing communication errors to an Ethernet module. The line went down. Fourteen people standing around waiting, and our budget supplier's phone line routed to a call center that promised to open a ticket. Three business days, no response. The account manager — who had been quick with quotes and eager to close the deal during the sales process — suddenly became very hard to reach.
The value of a supplier isn't the speed of their quote. It's the certainty of their support when something goes wrong.
I finally called our previous distributor, half expecting an "I told you so." Instead, they had an engineer on-site the same afternoon. Diagnosis: corrupted firmware in the CPU. They re-flashed it within two hours, and the line was running before the end of the day.
The service call cost a few hundred dollars. The production downtime — lost output, idle labor, manager time spent firefighting — cost several thousand. The bargain modules we'd bought over the previous year hadn't saved us anything. They'd just quietly compounded the risk that eventually detonated.
I still kick myself for that. One of my biggest regrets is not verifying the supplier's technical depth before switching. If I'd asked even one compatibility question during the quote phase, it would've been obvious that the budget vendor didn't have any engineers on staff.
After May 2022, I rebuilt our entire evaluation process around total cost of ownership — TCO. Here's the checklist I now apply to every Mitsubishi PLC distributor quote that crosses my desk:
People think working with a quality distributor costs more. Actually, it's the reverse: distributors who genuinely know Mitsubishi products can charge reasonable prices because they deliver value that prevents expensive failures. The causation runs the other way. They're not expensive because they're good — they're cheaper in the long run because they're good.

A quote that beats everyone by 10 percent isn't a bargain if it arrives late, supports nothing, and voids your warranty. After four years and one particularly painful May, I've learned to ask a better question: "Which supplier costs the least?" — not, "Which supplier charges the least?" Those are very different questions.
